ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Dr. Gordon Groh, an orthopaedic surgeon at Blue Ridge Bone & Joint, was a key presenter at Fracture Fixation symposiums held recently in St. Louis, Mo., and Baltimore, Md. Approximately 30 orthopaedic surgeons from the Midwest attended the St. Louis session, and Groh spoke to the same number of orthopaedic surgery residents from the East Coast at the Baltimore symposium.

DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. selected Groh, who specializes in shoulder surgery, to address treatment of shoulder fractures using the company’s Global Fx Shoulder Fracture System. The lectures focused on treatment of proximal humeral fractures with intramedullary nailing and shoulder replacement. Groh demonstrated the techniques using a cadaver.

“Approximately four to five percent of adults in the United States have some sort of shoulder operation each year,” says Groh, who joined Asheville, N.C.-based Blue Ridge Bone & Joint in 1995. “These symposiums provide me an opportunity to discuss recent advancements in shoulder fracture treatment with other orthopaedic surgeons and physicians in training. The Global Fx system includes more options for component size and alignment jigs, which improve patient outcomes.”

A specialist in shoulder, elbow and hand surgery, Groh is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis. He received his medical degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine-Columbia and completed a shoulder fellowship at the University of Texas at San Antonio, as well as a hand surgery fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Groh has also been awarded a certificate of added qualification in hand surgery, and he is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Shoulder and Elbow Society, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the North Carolina Orthopaedic Society and the North Carolina Hand Society.

Groh has delivered numerous research presentations on a variety of orthopaedic surgery topics and has contributed to dozens of orthopaedic-related publications. Groh also conducts product evaluations for DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc.
